more thoughts on Narcissus and Goldmund

it's interesting, i read another chapter at lunch. okay that part is interesting, me reading on break? what the fuck?

okay...nevermind that. but it was pretty interesting to find out that the boy is in school for monkhood. and he's developing this relationship with an assistant teacher who is going to be a monk as well. and in one chapter, the boys sneak out to spend time in the village. and a girl takes a liking to Goldmund and she kisses him slightly as he leaves. so this guy is all torn up over it, because he's stuck on his friendship for Narcissus and his road to being a monk. so he feels it was sinful.

it seems like Hesse is comparing homosexuality to priesthood. and this friendship between the two is causing a stir at the school. people are talking about it and slandering them for having this relationship. almost hinting of homophobia. he even refers to their friendship as "unnatural" and "un-christian." it's kind of weird. i'm engrossed in this book. i don't think hesse is a christian author. he has a lot to do with mysticism and eastern thought. i think it's cool. i need to read more.

it's funny cuz Narcissus is this calm, well respected, and young teacher. Goldmund is this passionate new-comer who is often referred to as beautiful. there are a lot of references to his blond hair and beautiful gazing eyes. And Narcissus has penetrating eyes, and a penetrating sense into someone's soul. a lot of penetration. it's very homo-erotic. hehe, no not really. but there's definitely presense of sexual tension. not at all what i expected from this book. it's great.
