it had just occurred to me that i have never been to a real desert party. i've been to a rave called the electric daisy carnival in the desert once. but that wasn't really anything like burning man or what i experienced this past weekend at all. it was just for overnight and we were out of there pretty quick.

but this past weekend, i went out with a small bunch of friends to a lakebed somewhere near barstow. it was secluded and beautiful. a somewhat medium sized flat surface of dried and cracked sand, surrounded by hills. we got there friday and set up shade structures, tents, and a DJ booth. the following two nights and two days were spent hanging out and conversing with some really great people. i got to speak to some burners and found that this experience was a tiny taste of what burning man is like.

we had put up a parachute to act as shade for the dance floor, but it turned out to be this big lumpy mess. the winds made it more of an art piece than it had provided any shade at all. it added more to the look of the event if anything. i also helped with a prototype dome that will be used in black rock this coming august. when it was finished, this feeling of accomplishment and awe overwhelmed me. seeing something erected that you had a hand in creating is an amazing feeling. although, the credit goes to the campers who built it for their village. i just helped putting it up. but i was extremely happy for them and empathized the feeling they must have felt. i wish i was much closer to SF so that i could have helped with the creation of hack's pieces, or the rube specifically.

the dust and dust storms were crazy. the wind was hot and the air was dry. it was bothersome at first, but i quickly adjusted and no longer cared if my hands were always clean. once i washed them, they'd gather dust the instant i dried them on my towel. i guess you can say i felt one with the dust. i actually kind of miss it.

anyway, this was a great first for me. i feel a little bit more confident about surviving in black rock this year. i have a day and a half left to get my village tax out to justin and then it's 8 weekends til burning man! i am drastically losing the remains of my raver status and slowly becoming a hippie! this is so much fun!
